The Birth of MAI
UK’s second RWB build was completed in November 2019. After a long wait and a lot of hard work preparing the car. Again, one of the most critical issues to address when starting an RWB project is to make sure the base car is in good condition. We started searching the internet for a suitable Porsche. We searched worldwide, and to our surprise, we were fortunate enough to find an immaculate 993 here in the UK. What was more surprising is that there was absolutely no rust or damage on the car, the exceptionally well-documented history was 4 inches deep and had all previous owner’s maintenance records and the original certificate of authenticity. A perfect car for an RWB conversion.
We decided on a 993 cabrio. The colour didn’t matter because we wanted to change it for something more desirable. When it came to deciding the style of the conversion kit, we did consider going for a Heavenly body, which would make it the widest RWB Porsche in the world, after serious consideration and knowing that we wanted to make the car useable, we decided on the standard wide-body conversion.
Like all conversions, once you decide on the style, it is then a waiting game to join the queue and sit back for a date when Nakai san can come and fit the kit, making it a true RWB. Being a Cabrio, we wanted to keep the streamlined look and opted for a Carrera wing which follows the lines. The colour is one of the most critical factors, and we chose Miami blue, which is a Porsche colour and complements the speed yellow and gold touches. The vehicle was fully re-painted, and the hood was re-sealed to protect it from the elements.
Inside there was a lot of work that took place, Recaro supplied and re-trimmed the seats and interior in deep blue Alcantara and supplied the Sportster CS seats, you will notice the seatbacks were painted in speed yellow creating a contrast. The dash clocks were re-made by Jason an excellent and knowledgeable chap from Reap Automotive. He finished it in matching Miami blue with the main dial in speed yellow, creating an unbelievable look. MOMO supplied the steering wheel and Hub to attach it to the existing splines. The rest of the interior was detailed to give it a new look.
The engine was in such good condition, but we serviced it anyway, as we wanted to make use of this car it was necessary to choose the correct tyres and we opted for Pirelli wrapped around the gold centre and polished dish from Work wheels. Take a look at the pictures of the finished car, now Hibiki has a partner, the final touch Nakai san makes, apart from signing the RWB, it is to name it, the name he gave it was Mai a Japanese word for a traditional dancing flutter.
We hope you are also inspired to build an RWB in the UK, contact us for guidance, remember a kit can be installed on a 911-930,964, 993 and now a 997 too. We can help you fulfil your dreams and own a piece of history in the making. Porsches have and always will be aspiring classics but an RWB in on another level.
